Building Automation Systems Engineer

SUMMARY

Monitors and controls various computer-controlled HVAC systems throughout the hospital to provide optimal temperature and pressure control along with energy efficiency.  Programs various systems to accommodate building and code changes along with patient care needs.  Also actively involved in evaluation and commissioning of new and existing HVAC systems.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Electromechanical Technology, Electromechanical Maintenance Technology, HVACR Technology, or Electrical Engineering Technology is required. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an Associate’s degree and 10 years of building automation systems experience may be considered.

Minimum 5 years of experience with the operations, maintenance, programming, and repairing of Trane, Johnson Controls or other Building Automation Systems (BAS) is required.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and sketches.  Able to prepare “as-built” sketches for all jobs assigned.

Valid Michigan driver’s license.

MECH Senior Certification is preferred.

Experience working under varied deadlines and properly prioritizing work to meet those deadlines. Experience working under changing circumstances with multiple interruptions.

Ability to work with a team and individually to develop, improve and implement departmental and/or system processes and procedures.

Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and interact in a team-oriented environment.

Knowledge of PC applications including Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, One Note, Outlook, Powerpoint). 

Demonstrated ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate verbally in a clear, articulate manner.

Demonstrated knowledge of all pertinent regulatory agency requirements (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS, State Fire Marshall, and MIOSHA).

ORGANIZATION

Reports to the Director of Facilities Maintenance; may consult with and receive direction from other directors, administrators or supervisors.

Coordinates activities of other Plant Engineering personnel assigned to assist with a specific job.  Is extensively involved in on-the-job training of other classifications as requested by supervision.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare.

  4. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.
  5. Provides exceptional customer service to employees, vendors, and other internal/external customers.
  6. Works under normal and emergency conditions, giving appropriate consideration to patients, visitors, staff and property.
  7. Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots the building automation systems.
  8. Coordinates and/or supervises the installation of any and all parts of the building automation system.
  9. Works closely with the design and engineering section of Plant Engineering on projects that involve any building automation system.
  10. Works closely with the facilities maintenance section of Plant Engineering and initiates work orders to correct problems associated with the building automation system.
  11. Maintains hardware and software used in the building automation system.                                                   
  12. Complies with all regulatory agencies’ requirements such as The Joint Commission, CMS, State of Michigan Office of Fire Safety, MIOSHA, National Electric Code, BOCA, Life Safety Code, etc.
  13. Verifies work order requirements and completeness by communicating with requesting personnel or department.
  14. Works closely with commissioning teams to optimize HVACR systems.
  15. Successfully troubleshoots equipment and system malfunctions in a logical manner leading to timely repair and return to normal service.
  16. Represents the hospital’s needs to contractors involved in new construction or renovations that affect any hospital mechanical systems.
  17. Is actively involved in energy saving initiatives and looks for opportunities to optimize energy efficiency.
  18. Operates in an environment that supports constant “retro commissioning”
  19. Ensures facility operations reflect industry “best practices” for energy consumption and sustainability.
  20. Tracks the facility’s energy use index through the Energy Star Program. Is responsible for data entry and consumption tracking.
  21. Coordinates contractor activity with reference to hospital services.
  22. Prepares and submits reports and records of activities as required.
  23. Performs all other duties as assigned.
