Description
SUMMARY:
The Emergency Department PA is responsible for medical management of all patients presenting with acute illness and injury to include diagnoses, procedures and treatment. This is an autonomous practitioner with sound judgement and practical skills. The PA performs functions based on personal experience and professional judgment & discussion with the physician as necessary; knowledge of physician preference; and written protocols.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
A Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an NCCPA accredited institution or PA Certificate Program.
Certification as a Physician Assistant by the AAPA (American Academy of Physician Assistants)
Licensure as a Physician Assistant by the State of Michigan
Previous experience in primary care or emergency setting is desirable.
Current BCLS, ACLS, PALS certification required.
Up to date knowledge of medical diagnosis and treatment of common problems seen in an Emergency Department. Medical history and physical exam skills. Knowledge of general medical diagnosis and treatment of problems common to general medical practice preferred. Familiarity with referral resources and medical staff of the hospital. Familiarity with medical staff and hospital policies and procedures.
ORGANIZATION:
Responsible to sponsoring medical staff member(s) for medical practice and hospital administrator or administrator’s designee for hospital contract and policy and procedure requirements.

Interrelationships with medical staff, other Munson Healthcare staff, staff of other medical providers and with the public.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Works as a member of the Emergency Department clinical team to promote, support and provide comprehensive medical care to patients as authorized and supervised by members of the medical staff.
Works independently at Critical Access Hospital Emergency Department to provide a full range of care from urgent care to critical care, often including emergent care that requires intervention without a physician immediately available. Sole medical staff provider on duty with physician on-call back up.
Performs routine histories and physical exams.
Provides other physician extension services.
Communicates effectively with and conveys respect for patients. Communicates effectively with and forms cooperative relationships with medical staff. Records clinical data in a complete and coherent manner.
Demonstrates a command of basic medical knowledge and technical skills. Shows sound professional judgment. Responds to medical supervision and correction in a positive manner.
Maintains current knowledge regarding changes in the medical field.

Maintains medical records in accordance with hospital guidelines and regulations.
Responds to emergency calls in a timely manner.

Demonstrates ability to establish effective working relationships with other members of the hospital staff.
Attends the Emergency Services Performance Improvement Committee (PIC) meetings.
Maintains confidentiality of patient information and works in accordance with HIPAA and patient rights guidelines.
Maintains up to date knowledge of hospital policies and procedures.
Adheres to Evaluation and Management Documentation Requirements and completes legible medical records documentation in accordance with established hospital policy.
Utilizes the current documentation and charting tools i.e. templates, Dragon or electronic medical record software for documentation as appropriate.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
