Performs Diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging of organs, organ systems and blood flow studies.  Provides radiologists with images necessary to obtain diagnostic results so that a comprehensive diagnostic report is available to referring physician.  Orients physicians, residents, staff and student technologist in objectives and applications of magnetic resonance imaging and safety. 



  • Must have passed or is eligible for the examination for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in MRI.  Continued employment is provisional and based on completion by the ARRT in MRI within six months.


  • Must have passed the examination for the American of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and remain in good standing. 
  • Prefer two years’ experience in MRI.
  • Maintains BLS certification with biannual renewal.

  1. Acknowledges that safety is a self-responsibility. Knows the physical requirements of the job and work within those guidelines.  Performs job duties safely at all times, utilizing learned body mechanics and transferring/lifting techniques.  Plans actions to promote safety.  Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to Hospital procedure.
  2. Performs MRI imaging services without direct supervision.
  3. Operates imaging equipment and ancillary equipment to complete the scanning process.
  4. Position patients – immobilizing when necessary.
  5. Practices magnetic imaging safety and precautions.
  6. Evaluates scanning images for technical and diagnostic quality.
  7. Assumes responsibility for assigned areas and tasks.
  8. Assumes care for physical and psychological needs of patients during scanning procedure.
  9. Practices aseptic techniques with necessary.
  10. Administers IV contrast media and oral medication.
  11. Assists in determining special requirements prior to magnetic scanning.
  12. Initiates life support measures as required for patient. Requires certification in CPR technique.
  13. Provides input for equipment and supply decisions.
  14. Assumes responsibility for portions of the QA program.
  15. Pursues ongoing education.
  16. Controls inventory and acquisition of supplies for assigned area through established channels.
  17. Instructs Radiology students and visitors in the operation of a Magnetic Imaging scanner.
  18. Must be efficient in solving procedural problems at they deviate from normal and adapt when necessary.
  19. Must use tact, diplomacy, and compassion when dealing with patients, visitors and other parties.
  20. Makes judgments regarding priority of own work when high volume situations arise, maintaining overall established department priorities.
  21. Is responsible for determining equipment malfunction and reporting same to supervisor and/or service engineer.
  22. May work off shifts, weekends and be responsible for on-call responsibilities.
  23. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Continuous standing/walking and occasional/intermittent sitting.
  • Continuous use of bilateral upper extremities in fine motor activities requiring fingering, grasping, and forward reaching between waist and shoulder level to handle/operate medical equipment/devices.
  • Frequent reaching above shoulder level and overhead.
  • Frequent forward bending, twisting, squatting and kneeling; occasional climbing.
  • Occasional repositioning and use of assistive devices when transferring patients weighing up to 400 pounds between bed, chair, and gurney.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional/intermittent pushing of gurneys, wheelchairs, bed and other medical equipment over tiled and carpeted surfaces.
  • Continuous use of near vision to read medical equipment such as monitoring devices and reading documents and computer screens; hearing and verbal communication to interact with patients, co-workers, and other customers.




  • Primarily an inside building/office environment, well lighted and ventilated, which may consist of multiple treatment and/or work sites.
  • Fast and continuous work pace with variable workload.
  • Frequent contact with staff and public under a variety of circumstances. Requires ability to communicate clearly (in English) verbally and in writing for effective communication with other staff members, physicians, vendors, community members, patients and patient families, employees and applicants of all socio-economic levels from a diverse cultural and ethnic population.
  • Subject to many interruptions from multiple calls and inquiries and potentially emotional situations involving accidents, injuries, illness and/or death.
  • Handles emergency/crisis situations in accordance with Hospital policy.
  • Answers phones or pages; may carry a beeper/pager, and/or use a two-way radio.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Potential risk of exposure to hazards from chemicals (toxic and non-toxic), flammable materials, gas or electrical or radiant energy or equipment with/without moving parts.
