Resource Nurse Clinician - Day Shift

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides clinical education and evaluation to nursing and patient care staff. Facilitates education based upon evidence-based research using adult learning techniques. 


Duties and Responsibilities
1. Works within the patient, nurse, and system spheres of influence to improve patient outcomes.
2. Works directly with Nursing Departments, Quality, and Infection Prevention to determine high priority educational needs (Ex. Sepsis, Restraints, Fall prevention, CAUTI, CLABSI, etc.)
3. Assists in assuring compliance through education/training with all regulatory (JCAHO) and other agency requirements, laws and statutes pertaining to clinical practice/operation of the department.
4. Collaborates with medical providers, clinical nurse specialist, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of education.
5. Participates in performance improvement activities.
6. Participates in nursing work groups as designated by nursing directors/managers.
7. Develops orientation plans based on input from Nursing Directors and Managers.  
8. Initiates clinical skills development programs within the parameters of established clinical and preceptorship models; implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards.
9. Provides clinical orientation to new nursing staff including but not limited to the nurse’s role in meeting clinical quality measures, policies, protocols, clinical skills, equipment usage (Ex. IV pumps, PCAs, mechanical lifts, bladder scanner, warming/cooling devices) and alarm safety, etc.  
10. Collaborate with the orientee & preceptor weekly to set goals, assess the skill level of new employee to determine the extent/duration of orientation and training required. 
11. Educate patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops with vendors. 
12. Assists in the verification/monitoring of staff competencies and required certifications (BLS, ACLS). Develops and revises competency statements/checks for staff as indicated.
13. Facilitates education using HealthStream, interactive programs, hands on training, simulation, and computer based or online training.
14. Provides skills day education and/or annual competency education/assessments based on identified needs and/or regulatory requirements.  
15. Assists in clinical education/orientation of students of various academic agencies and serves as liaison with various college/university faculty. 
16. Facilitates Shared Governance Committee to help address clinical concerns as they relate to nursing care and delivery.
17. Has a strong presence and frequently rounds on inpatient units to observe potential educational opportunities.
18. Supports nursing staff in patient education initiatives. 
19. Supports EMR training and initiatives.
20. Acts as a resource person by supporting and reinforcing the clinical skills and judgment of the staff. 
21. Performs chart reviews and educates nursing staff regarding omissions/trends/gaps noted in patient care/documentation.
22. Ability to function as a staff nurse (See registered Nurse JD) in the department as indicated by nursing director/manager to maintain current clinical skills/processes within the clinical setting and support departmental staffing needs PRN.
23. Adheres to OMH policies and procedures to minimize risk of harm to patients or staff.

26. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Minimum requirement of bachelor’s degree in Nursing
2. Master’s degree in nursing preferred or completed within 4 years of hire date.
3. Current State of Michigan Registered Nursing License.
4. Minimum of 4 years acute care clinical experience.
5. Previous experience in education of others.
6. American Heart Association BLS must be attained by the end of the month following 60 days from start date and renewed every 2 years.
7. Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures, and standards within area of nursing expertise.
8. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
9. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
10. Completes required continuing education requirements for licensure and maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in Nursing by reading appropriate books, journals and attending related seminars and conferences.
11. Utilizes information systems for patient information, accessing policies/procedures,  Hospital information and resource materials. 
12. Demonstrates ability in using the computer with Windows format: Excel, Word and Power-point. 


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
1. Regularly works in a clinical environment with exposure to prolonged standing, walking, and lifting. 
2. Lifts and/or maneuvers equipment and instrument trays using appropriate body mechanics. Potential for personal injury or harm is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
3. Work may involve some exposure to operating circumstances that require following standard or prescribed safety or infection prevention precautions
