Description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
  • High school graduate, preferable with courses in biology and chemistry.
  • Previous lab experience or medical assistant training and /or certification desired.
  • Good work history in customer service focused positions, with an emphasis on excellent attendance, strong work ethic and teamwork abilities.
  • Good vision, manual dexterity and physical ability to work well in a highly mobile environment is essential.
  • Requires concise, legible handwriting, and keyboarding skills. Experience with online computer systems is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate verbally & in writing, comprehend verbal instructions, and have good telephone etiquette.
  • Must be available for weekend and holiday scheduling.

ORGANIZATION
Under direct supervision of technical director and section managers; may also receive instruction from pathologists, technologists, technicians and section managers.

Has daily working contact with laboratory staff, nursing personnel, inpatients and outpatients

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Primary laboratory contact with patients, nursing units, physicians and their offices. Responsible for the first and lasting impression of our laboratory.

Remains pleasant, professional and helpful on phone and in person with coworkers and patients

Performs multiple tasks at once with accuracy, attention to detail and timeliness, recognizing that patient care, treatment, and outcomes may be dependent on his/her performance.
Performs tasks according to procedures/policies.

Works frequently under stress due to handling of multiple emergent blood sample and phone calls, yet remains calm and efficient and continues to follow protocols.

Prioritizes work depending on emergent need or acuity of patients. Constantly adjusts workflow and re-prioritizes as emergent situations and/or interruptions occur.

Uses multiple computer programs to locate information and process samples.

Walks, stands or moves around the department or hospital. Kneels next to bedside when necessary.

Adheres to safety policies and safe work practices

Attends all mandatory inservice programs including annual safety education as required.

Promptly and properly receives specimens from the pneumatic tube system, processes samples of many types and handling requirements including centrifuging, aliquoting, testing, tracking, ordering, distribution, loading on automated system.

Properly prepares 24 hour urine collection containers

Aliquots and makes pH adjustments as required to urine specimens including mixing, measuring and handling.

Locates samples for technologists and send out personnel

Performs maintenance activities which may include: cleaning glassware and pipettes, restocking supplies, replacing hazardous waste containers, recording temperatures, discarding old samples, maintains a clean work area.

Communicates with nursing units to obtain orders/resolve order conflicts for specimens.

Collects blood from inpatients, outpatients and nursing homes according to established procedures and policies. Includes capillary punctures and venipuncture on infants and adults, and radial arterial punctures on adults.
Performs Point-of-Care testing procedures. May include instrument checks and quality control procedures.

Performs glucose tolerance tests and is responsible for obtaining the timed blood samples.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Performs clerical and send-out duties including but not limited to communication with couriers, covering call center phones, processing all incoming specimens promptly and appropriately.as needed
