Behavioral health nursing is a fulfilling and demanding career that requires a high-level of compassion and sensitivity, as well as excellent communication skills. Behavioral health nurses, also referred to as psychiatric mental health nurses or mental health nurses, work with patients of all ages, helping them address complex emotional and physical needs.
D6 Inpatient Behavioral Health is a 17-bed general adult unit with a variety of patients with illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, etc. D6 has a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatric providers, nurses, clinicians and BH technicians.
Behavioral health clinicians must have exceptional communication and relationship skills, including the ability to set boundaries and establish and maintain trust. Therapeutic communication skills are essential to empowering patients and promoting mental health. Psychiatric mental health nurses must become proficient in knowing not only what to say, but how to say it, with the right tone of voice, volume, and body language.
Additionally, members of the care team must be flexible, demonstrate openness toward diverse lifestyles, and have a strong foundation in the behavioral sciences as well as medical science. They must be prepared to meet the complex needs of their patients and maintain a calm, caring demeanor in an environment that can at times be unpredictable.
