SUMMARY

This position involves case finding, abstraction and follow-up of individual cancer cases. Knowledge of tumor staging and classification is required. The person in this role must be highly detailed, and focused on accuracy. Will receive day to day job assignments form the lead cancer registrar. 

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Certification as a Tumor Registrar by the National Cancer Registrars Association preferred, and is required within two years of hire if not already obtained. A two year associate’s degree in Medical Record Technology, Medical Record Administration or a Healthcare related field is required.

 

Experience: Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. Knowledge of ICDO coding. Knowledge of data entry, data base analysis, and computerized cancer registries. Experience as a cancer registrar in a hospital based registry preferred.

 

Special Skills: Must enjoy detail, strive for accuracy and be conscientious in

comprehensive data necessary for the Cancer Registry. Course

work in statistics for preparation of studies and reports is desirable.

Typing and computer skills required. Excellent interpersonal and

communication skills required.  Demonstrated ability to meet           productivity and quality standards is required.

 

ORGANIZATION

 

This position is supervised by the Manager of Oncology Support Services. Individual will work closely with the Lead Cancer Registrar and will accept job assignments, guidance and suggestions from him/her. Responsibility for the Cancer Registry requires the individual to work closely with the Cancer Committee, tumor conference leadership, and the Medical Staff and their offices. Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.

 

  1. Works with Lead Registrar to establish procedures for identifying all cases of     

  malignant disease from departments of the hospital where patients are diagnosed and  treated.

 

  1. Abstract and code cancers according to the approved Reportable List and as directed by the Cancer Committee. Assembles core information currently and accurately for each cancer case, providing a summary of the patient’s hospital record, brief history of the cancer and its management annual follow-up information, survival time, and the quality of survival. Enters information into the appropriate database.

 

  1. Works with Lead Registrar to maintain successful lifetime follow-up of at least 90% of  all patients in the Registry through contact with the current private physician or through direct contact with the patient, family, social agency, etc.  Verifies computer reports generated listing of time programmed follow-up.

 

  1. Complete abstracts as suggested by the National Cancer Institute and the American College of Surgeons by analyzing and coding neoplastic information from the medical record.

 

  1. Works with Lead Registrar to organize and maintain a data system which will conform to the highest standards of Cancer Registry operation and meet the needs of the users of Registry data. Works with Lead Registrar to prepare studies and reports for presentation to the Medical Staff and Cancer Committee.

 

 

  1. Serve on the hospital Cancer Committee and Cancer Conference in an advisory          capacity as required.

 

  1. In collaboration with the Lead Registrar, tabulates information and prepares reports for use by the Medical Staff, Administration, and other health professionals in the hospital as required.

 

  1. Prepare reports and questionnaires for the American College of Surgeons.

 

  1. Participates in educational activities of local, state and national cancer registrars

           associations.

 

  1. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
