Description
The Preadmission Planner is a Registered Nurse (RN) who obtains medication and health history information from patients over the phone scheduled for surgery or a procedure. The RN has job responsibilities in care coordination, patient and family education, and ensuring the chart contains the necessary information and documentation. Responsibilities include ordering labs and testing per anesthesia guidelines/physician order, reviewing labs/testing results, and working with office staff, physicians, and Chart Prep staff.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Experience caring for adult surgical patients within the last 5 years preferred. Examples include, but are not limited to: Surgical Unit, OR, PACU, Outpatient Surgery or Ambulatory Surgery.
Intermediate to advanced keyboarding and computer skills required. Examples include, but are not limited to: Windows, Outlook, Power Chart, Internet, QES and PHS systems.
Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
Evidence of effective time management and organizational skills required.
Nursing Baccalaureate Degree, BSN, preferred. Certification in the specialty area of practice is strongly encouraged.
Previous preadmission planning experience preferred.
Utilization management and/or case management experience preferred.
Experience caring for pediatric patients preferred. Examples include, but are not limited to: Pediatric Unit, OR, PACU, Urgent Care, Emergency Department, and Home Care.
Experience with or knowledge of pharmacology, radiology procedures, cardiac procedures, and surgical procedures within last 5 years preferred.
Evidence of a high degree of professionalism must be exhibited with current involvement in unit process improvement or shared governance activities preferred.
BCLS required.
ORGANIZATION
Accountable to the Surgical Services Director, Managers, or their designee.
Works collaboratively with all members of the Patient Care Team including but not limited to Registration Representatives, Central Scheduling, Chart Prep Staff, Anesthesiologists, Staff from other hospital departments, and the Physician Office Staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Subject to time pressure and frequent interruptions.
Most work will be restricted to an office environment with frequent phone interruptions.
Frequent use of computer terminals.
Work schedule may vary according to patient load.

6. Practices the perianesthesia role within the Advanced Registration & Testing Center (ARTC) and Preoperative Assessment Center (POAC) in accordance with the recommended practices and standards of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses.
7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
