GENERAL SUMMARY 
The Medical Director of System Transfers is a system position (physician with nurse leader dyad) with focus on system transfers and patient throughput. This individual works collaboratively with clinical and physician leaders throughout the system to reduce clinical variation and improve quality metrics, with focus on Emergency and Inpatient services.
The System Transfers Medical Director will report directly to the Executive sponsor of the Patient Placement and Transfer center. This individual will work with the system executive leaders and medical staffs to provide physician leadership to the system transfer efforts/initiatives and be a major communicator to the Medical Staffs and physician leaders in association with this work.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS
  • The candidate must be a graduate of an approved Medical School and must be Board Certified in his/her specialty. 
  • The candidate should also have at least five (5) years of clinical practice experience and be qualified for an appointment to the Medical Staff at Munson Healthcare.
  • The candidate should have demonstrated leadership skills and education in administrative/leadership skills. 
  • An advanced degree in health administration is desirable, although not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in leadership positions is essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare.
  2. Acknowledges that safety is self-responsibility.  Knows physical requirements of the job and works within those guidelines. Performs job duties safely at all times, utilizing learned body mechanics and transferring/lifting techniques.  Plans actions to promote safety. Reports any unsafe situation/equipment according to hospital procedure.
  3. Provides physician leadership and oversight for the development of processes for: patient transfers between units and facilities, system wide bed access and availability, capacity management, telemedicine support for specialty care, EMS relationships, community partners.
  4. Provides support to providers and CMOs as needed on transfer requests/calls.
  5. As medical lead, provides clinical direction for services associated with patient transfers.
  6. Provides physician leadership and support to nurse leader dyad partner on process, protocols, and standardization initiatives to support system transfer center.
  7. Cultivates regional and system behavior through physician leadership in the development and participation in system ED/Hospital initiatives to include: ED throughput, clinical variation, ED utilization management, ED behavioral health, OBS care, appropriateness of transfers, appropriateness of consults and others as needed to support system transfer improvement efforts.
  8. Provides physician leadership and support for: Trauma designations, protocols for Stroke/STEMI/Sepsis care and others as needed.
  9. Serves as co-leader and convener with nurse leader dyad for the System Transfer Steering Committee and department meeting to provide oversight to this work and development of performance metrics. 
  10. Partners with providers, including Hospitalist, Intensivists, consultants, primary cares and Emergency medicine, to remove barriers and support collaboration in the coordination of patient transfers.
  11. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
