Position Description:

Not your typical nursing job! Take your excellent time management, multitasking, and communication skills and apply them to a unique career as a research nurse. Each day is different, but a typical day will include collaborating with coworkers and off-site project team members, extracting data from multiple sources, providing education to and communicating with nursing and medical staff as well as ancillary teams with a dash of research directed patient care mixed in.   No two days are the same, no two studies are the same.  You can expect constant learning and growth.

The Clinical Research Nurse on the Multidisciplinary team assists in the conduct of clinical trials in a variety of therapeutic areas including neurology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery among others. A clinical nurse provides patient care.  A research nurse cares for their patient, but follows a research protocol using very specific timelines, assessments and evaluations.  Tasks and processes of a clinical research nurse:

  • Review/screen new and established patients for eligibility for clinical trials
  • Approach providers about the studies for review
  • Facilitate the informed consent process and ensure regulatory approvals are in place
  • Communicate with providers on patient study status
  • Collaborate with investigators for treatment plans and orders
  • Work with ancillary departments such as lab, pharmacy, etc. to facilitate research protocol compliance
  • Facilitate/collaborate with clinical staff to make sure patient visits, surgical procedures or treatments include protocol required care
  • Managing non-clinical study elements – examples:
    • Special testing
    • Specimen collection, processing and shipping
    • Data collection and submission
    • Safety reporting
    • Administering questionnaires, assessments and collection of patient reported outcomes
  • Participate in monitoring and auditing activities
  • Maintain open communication with the patient throughout their participation in trial activities
