Description
The Charging Specialist is a critical member of the Revenue Cycle Team and is responsible for analyzing clinical documentation to assign observation hourly charges, ER E/M levels, infusions, injections, and procedures per departmental guidelines for administrative and facility financial purposes.
This is an entry level position which may progress to a Graduate Coder or to a Coder/Abstractor position.
Education/Experience/Certification:
- Associate degree in business or healthcare related field required
- Certification as a RHIT, RHIA, CCS, or CCA preferred
- One-year previous experience utilizing an electronic medical record, a patient registration and/or clinical billing system is required.
Key Competencies/Skills:
- Demonstrated knowledge of CPT-4 and ICD-10 coding concepts and principles is preferred.
- One to two years’ experience in data abstraction, coding and/or clinical charging is preferred.
Essential Duties:
- Analyzes medical record documentation to apply federal rules and CPT-4 coding principles to identify charges for various procedures and clinical departments (i.e., medication administration, Observation Services, Outpatient Extended Stays, and Cardiac Catheterization Lab).
- Accurately identifies and enters charges in a timely manner in the patient’s STAR financial record, meeting expected quality and productivity standards.
- Works closely with Utilization Management, Health Information Management, Business Office, and Charge Master colleagues to resolve patient type and other key charging issues.
- Abstracts and/or edits medical record data (e.g., problem list SNOMED conversion) as required by departmental procedure.
- Communicates and resolves documentation issues with nursing and/or other clinical providers as they relate to procedures and medication administration charges.
- Works with leadership to report issues and identify trends that impact charging.
- Maintains organized system for personal job-related reference material.
- Participates in educational activities and staff meetings.
Reports to:
Reports to the Regional Manager of Coding and Data Integrity Services. Has constant working contact with a Coding Operations Coordinator and Coding Operations Analyst.
